Ookla, the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing, revealed that Irvine has the best broadband in the country, with an average download speed of 124 Mbps and an upload speed of 52 Mbps. This was on Google Fiber, which represents 6 out of the 10 top cities with the fastest internet in the U.S.
Google Fiber is currently available in more than 30 Irvine Company apartment communities. It offers Irvine residents download and upload speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, about 40 times faster than the average internet speed in the U.S. For reference, this fast connection lets you download a two-hour movie in less than 10 seconds. Erin Schultz, head of Google Fiber operations in Orange County explains, “whether you’re a student working on homework, an entrepreneur or creating running a small business from home, or a family trying to navigate the holidays with everyone watching or playing their favorite movie or game at the same time, faster internet makes it easier.”
Ookla speedtest data reveals a 35.8% increase in mean download speed during the last year and a 22.0% increase in upload speed. As a result, the U.S. ranks 7th in the world for download speed, between Hungary and Switzerland. The U.S. ranks 27th for upload, between Bulgaria and Canada, during Q2-Q3 2018.
